Elements of Successful Philanthropy - Building a Comprehensive and Sustainable Development Program for Your Organization

The workshop will be held as a series of four half-day sessions

Attendees can register for the full four-session workshop, or can register for individual sessions per their interest.   Individual sessions are priced at a set fee of $59.00.


Session 1, March 25, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Understanding the Basics: The world of nonprofit fundraising is highly competitive, especially now. With the call on donors’ dollars coming from multiple organizations with a variety of missions, it is more important than ever for nonprofits to invest in building a strong development program that allows them to be sustainable and effective in delivering their mission for the long term. The “Understanding the Basics” session will introduce attendees to trends in philanthropy and to the larger development landscape. You will learn about the fundamentals of fundraising-- the "why" and "how" of fundraising, and fundraising for organizational stability and building capacity and the development process and relationship management.


Session 2, March 26, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Getting your Organization "Development Ready": The second session in the series will
begin with a look at an effective governance structure for effective development.  We will then shift gears to talk about the planning process for creating a strong development program. You will learn how to pull together a development plan for your organization. Attendees will also learn how to develop a strong case for support--understanding the "Why", effective storytelling, and the components of a strong case. This session will also take attendees through the need for a strong evaluation process (as part of your case and grants) to measure the impact of programs.


Session 3, April 1, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Understanding Grants and Grantors: During this third session, participants will get an in-depth view into the world of grants, foundations, and what makes a successful grant proposal package. This segment will arm you with effective strategies for identifying the right foundation prospects and structuring strong grant requests with clear and effective program/project budgets. This session will also include information about corporate partnerships and sponsorships, and how to go about securing these effectively for your organization.


Session 4, April 2, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Individual Giving & Capital Campaigns: The fourth and final session in this series will focus on individual giving and capital campaigns. Attendees will understanding: the challenges and motivations (of individual donors); generational giving; the building blocks of annual funds; and cultivating relationships for major gift fundraising. Participants will also learn the basics of how to run a capital campaign--the process, the team, the feasibility analysis, and the budget for a campaign.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation requests must be received in writing or via email by March 15, 2021, in order to receive a refund. A cancellation fee will be charged ($25 for full workshop, $15 for individual sessions). No refunds will be issued after this date. The Friends of the Texas Historical Commission's development workshops are geared towards volunteer leadership (board members and advisors) and staff from nonprofit organizations interested in learning more about securing philanthropic support for their organization. The series is suited for large and small organizations from any discipline, with limited development staff, or with all-volunteer boards leading the work of the organization.
